A.M. Vitals: CVS Paying $1.25 Billion to Expand Medicare Part D Business

Happy New Year!

PBM Deal: CVS Caremark will pay $1.25 billion for Universal American?s Medicare Part D drug business, the WSJ reports. The deal, which will pay Universal American?s shareholders about $12.80 to $13 a share, will take CVS Caremark?s Part D membership to about 3.1 million people from 1.2 million, the paper says.

Six Key States: Keep an eye on six states to see how health-care overhaul is playing out, Politico reports. Vermont, for example, will attempt to institute a single-payer system, while Alaska may ?emerge as a key state to watch to understand how HHS will deal with? a state whose leadership is totally opposed to the law, Politico says.

New Drug Approvals: The FDA approved approximately 21 new prescription drugs last year, according to the agency?s monthly reports, the WSJ reports. If that number stands when the FDA reports its official annual total later this month, it would be four fewer approvals than in 2009.

J&J Deal: Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and Johnson & Johnson will announce today that they are collaborating on a microchip-based test to detect tumor cells in patients? blood, hopefully allowing physicians to track cancer and better target treatments, the Boston Globe reports. The deal will be worth about $30 million depending on whether the test meets certain benchmarks, the paper says. (Here?s an AP story on the same topic.)
